Sovereign of The Seas

At the time of this cruise, the Sovereign of The Seas was the largest cruise ship in the world. Here are some of the statistics:

Length: 874 ft.
Width: 106 ft.
Gross tonnage: 74,000 tons
Passenger Capacity: 2,282
Staff size: 750

Although there were 2,500+ people on board, you'd never know it. No area was ever crowded, except for the dinner sittings. The ship had a small library, disco, a two-level entertainment lounge for live shows, a casino and two movie theatres. It's certainly small by today's ships, but it was very nice. If you were a runner, it was easy to track your progress. One lap around the ship was 1/4 mile.

This was the center of the ship, called The Centrum.

This is a view of the top deck looking towards the bow. There are two swimming pools and a jacuzzi and lots of room for the sun lizards. We were at port in Puerto Rico, which was a perfect time to be there, because as you can see, the place was dead. Otherwise you often had to get through the crowds.

This is a view of the back of the ship at port in Puerto Rico. The platform you see below the smoke stacks is the Viking Crown Lounge, which gave you a 360 degree view of the ocean while you were sailing.

There was a lot of entermainment throughout the day. This was a mariachi(?) band performing just before we were seated for dinner.

This is another picture of the ship, anchored just off shore.

As you got closer, you felt very small compared to the size of the ship.

Late at night, there were a lot of parties on the top deck next to the swimming pools.
